Tottenham Hotspur are close to the signing of Clement Lenglet on loan, according to reports. The French international will join the North London side for a season. Antonio Conte has personally approved the move.
According to Marca, Spurs and Barcelona have now reached an agreement has been reached. It is just a matter of final details now.
This ends Spurs search for a new left-sided center back. Although they have Ben Davies in their squad, who was a superb performer last season as Spurs conceded only 2 goals in their final 6 games. But Lenglet provides competition and a rotation option for the Welshman. With his superb passing ability, he may also be deployed in the middle of the back 3 which Conte employs.
Lenglet has also been granted permission to miss pre-season training in order to complete the move. According to The Times, his £170,000-a-week pay appeared to put a halt to negotiations at one time. But Tottenham finally agreed to fulfil his expectations after devising a wage-sharing plan with the Catalan club.
Spurs initially did not appear to be Lenglet’s first choice. Marca goes on to say that the 27-year-old ‘hesitated’ because he was looking for more lucrative proposals abroad.
Juventus approached Lenglet as a possible replacement for the departing Matthijs de Ligt. However, they opted not to pursue the deal. Conte then approached Lenglet and persuaded him that Spurs could be an enticing destination.
Tottenham Hotspur: Window So Far
Tottenham Hotspur have been very active in the market now. Clement Lenglet will be their fifth signing of the window.
They recently completed the signing of Richarlison from Everton in a deal that could reach 60 million pounds. The Brazilian joins Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Fraser Forster.
Furthermore, they remain interested in Middlesbrough starlet Djed Spence. He plays as a right-wingback and was instrumental in Nottingham Forest’s promotion last season when he was on loan.
