Thomas Tuchel hints using Saul Niguez in the wing-back role

Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has hinted at potentially using Saul Niguez in the Chelsea left wing-back position in absence of Ben Chilwell.

Saul Niguez arrived this summer on loan from Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish midfielder has failed to perform well. Saul has failed to impress the Chelsea faithful so far. While he has only played 239 minutes in his five appearances for the club. The Spanish midfielder has made just three appearances so far in the league. While he was taken off at half-time on two of these occasions.

Saul is also frustrated with the lack of game time, but the Spanish international has struggled to cope with the pace of Premier League football. There were reports that Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea were planning to cut Saul Niguez’s loan short in the January transfer window.

But with an Acl injury to first-choice left wing-back Ben Chilwell, the situation may have changed for Saul as well. Marcos Alonso has stepped up again just like at the start of the season and played as the left wing-back in the last few games. With Chilwell possibly out for a long while, Thomas Tuchel may be forced to use Saul in the left wing-back position.

Thomas Tuchel’s comment on using Saul as the Chelsea left wing-back

Talking in the press conference Thomas Tuchel said:

“I think that he could play in a wing-back role for us. Even if we play a dominant or offensive game, he is strong at arriving in the opponent’s box, very strong at finishing, and has good timing.

“We sometimes do this in training. That is why we have the impression that he could maybe be a good fit. And maybe in the next games. We simply have to try it because Chilly is out long term and a lot of games are coming and we cannot put every game on Marcos Alonso’s shoulders.”

This position change may be a good chance for Saul Niguez. Saul is known for his running in the middle of the park and has mostly played as a box-to-box midfielder. The position change may help him revive his Chelsea career and cement a place in the first team.
