Stan Wawrinka feels he’s still not fit enough to compete

3-times Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka pulls out of the Swiss Open in Gstaad. The player feels that he is not fit enough to compete in the tournament. He is not happy with his current progress after coming back from a year-long injury.

The decision will surprise his fans but it’s actually a smart thing to do. He has currently slipped in the tennis rankings due to his absence from the sport. Currently ranked outside of the top 100, Wawrinka is not happy with his fitness and his therapists.

The decision came after Stan Wawrinka lost to the Spaniard, Pablo Carreno in the first round of the Bastad Open. He may have understood that he’s far away from his best in order to compete against the biggies of the game.

“Even though I’m happy with the progress. I know that I’m still not where I want to be and where I need to be in order to compete and win consecutive matches at the highest level.”

The Swiss player has always found himself in trouble due to his foot injury. And, the player also struggled to win matches in Rome, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon. Since he is now 37-year old it’s very difficult to see him lifting up another title.

I’m sad to say that I will have to withdraw from Gstaad.”

Stan Wawrinka said on social media.

“Always, but even more in Switzerland, I want to play my best in front of my fans. I only want to go on court when I feel that I can properly compete. I’m extremely sorry about this.”

“Hopefully see you next year in beautiful Gstaad! Meanwhile I will keep working hard for the rest of the season. Next stop is the US swing.

the player further added.

Hopefully, this decision will allow him extra time to prepare for the next stop which is US Open.
