Mikel Arteta’s long-term plans will have Myles Lewis-Skelly in a new role at the north London side.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is thriving under Arteta

Mikel Arteta thinks Myles Lewis-Skelly’s long-term Arsenal future might be in midfield. Although he has been called up by England for his recent performances at left-back.

The 18-year-old has impressed his way into the Gunners team this term. His displays impressed Thomas Tuchel so much that he was called up into his initial England squad early on Friday.

The youngster only broke into the north London side in September last year. His rise is the more surprising because it has been at left-back. He signed with the Gunners from their academy as a midfielder. However, less depth in the squad and injuries have seen him being switch into a full-back.

“He is extremely clever, extremely acute and extremely athletic,” said Arteta. “If you’ve got those three ingredients and you’ve also got a personality that can withstand blips. It can happen, that is Myles. That is what he has done.”

Arteta is, however, sure that the teenager can still play in midfield for his side someday.

“He is able to play an 8 and a 6,” he said. “It will be a matter of the relationships. And the chemistry among the other players, how that develops in the team.”.

“And football, where it is going, what it demands of some positions too. He is certainly a player who can play lots of positions.”

England call-up for the Arsenal sensation

Lewis-Skelly learned his trade in the Gunners’ youth academy as a midfielder. But was forced into the first team as a full-back because of injury. Since his professional debut in September the young player has gone from strength-to-strength.

Prior to linking up with his country colleagues at St. George’s Park, Myles-Skelly is set to play in the Gunners London derby against Chelsea on Sunday. He will look to earn his first cap as a full international against Albania or Latvia. England kick off their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.
