Everton have agreed personal terms with Burnley striker Maxwell Cornet. According to sources, however, a fee is yet to be finalized.
After Burnley was dropped to the Championship last season, the Toffees are eager to complete the signing of Cornet. They are prepared to pay the £17.5 million release clause for Ivory Coast international.
Burnley paid 15 million Pounds to secure the talented winger’s signature. He demonstrated last season that he can be quite productive even in a squad that is rather weak. After the departure of Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur, Frank Lampard will be looking to replace the Brazilian’s goals. Cornet provides a cost-effective option for the former-Chelsea man.
What Does Cornet Offer?
Although Cornet typically plays as a left winger, he is adaptable and capable of playing at left-back or even as a central striker. He did so for Burnley on a number of occasions last season. He scored 9 goals and 2 assists in an injury-ridden season last time out. At 25, Cornet may join the team and take up that position on the left flank without using up a sizable portion of the budget.
The signing will also provide Dominic Calvert-Lewin with competition and coverage as the number nine. It is particularly advantageous given the lack of influence Solomon Rondon has had since his arrival to Merseyside.
Cornet will join former teammate James Tarkowski should the move go through. The English defender moved to Everton on a free transfer earlier this window.
Everton have been rather cautious in the window, which is a good sign. It is a change of pace since their old days when they would spend huge sums on relatively disappointing players. With patience and shrewd squad building, they can revamp the team which was on the brink of relegation last season.
