Manchester United and England forward Marcus Rashford was awarded an honorary degree by Manchester University for his charity work. Following this award, Rashford has become the youngest recipient of an honorary doctorate from the university. While he joined Manchester United legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton who were also awarded an honorary degree in the past by the University.
The award was already last year June but due to Covid-19, it was not possible to give it in person. Following this, a special ceremony was arranged on 7th October to hand over the degree to Rashford in person. In that ceremony, Sir Alex Ferguson was also present to show support to the youngster. On receiving the honorary degree Marcus Rashford said in his speech, “To be here in the presence of a great such as Sir Alex Ferguson, and those who have played a huge role in my journey to be where I am today is special.
“I’m here to receive my Honorary Doctorate for my workaround child poverty. Yesterday, millions of families across the UK lost a lifeline and a means of staying afloat. A move that could see child poverty rise to 1 in 3 children. For that reason, today is bittersweet.
“It’s time that representatives got out into communities like mine. It’s time they saw first-hand the true measure of struggle. COVID-19 can no longer be used as an excuse.”
The forward just returned to the pitch for Manchester United in their last fixture as he was sidelined due to injury. While he also bagged one goal for his side in his first appearance this season as Manchester United lost 4-2 against Leicester City.
