Liverpool wanted to sign Chelsea star in the transfer window

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to sign Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria this summer. Liverpool signed Arthur Melo from Juventus on a loan. Moreover, Jurgen Klopp was open to the signing of his teammate Denis Zakaria also. The Reds made a late move for signing midfielders in the window and as such, Arthur was the one available this late.

Liverpool started the season with injuries to almost half the players in the midfield. Thiago, Keita, and Carvalho have all sustained injured this season. Moreover, it was the injury to captain Jordan Henderson that made them desperate for reinforcement. Late into the transfer window, Liverpool made a bid first for Denis Zakaria. However, he had already agreed on personal terms with Chelsea. As such, only Arthur Melo was available as a midfield option. The Reds signed him on loan on deadline day. According to Calciomercato, Klopp, was pushing to sign Denis Zakaria this season However, the clubs couldn’t reach an agreement with Juventus. So, the deal collapsed and Liverpool went for Arthur. The deal with Arthur has a £32.4m buy option embedded in his loan deal.

Liverpool currently sit seventh in the League with two wins, two draws, and a loss in their five matches in the League. The defeat came from the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford. Moreover, the Reds trashed Bournemouth 9-0 in an emphatic victory at Anfield. The last Merseyside derby ended in a draw with Frank Lampard’s men holding the relentless attack of Merseyside Reds at bay.

Liverpool injury update

Significant injuries have hampered Liverpool’s season so far. Consequently, Liverpool will be hoping that some of the injuries have lessened. Thiago has returned to full fitness before the Champions League group match. Joel Matip is available following his late cameo in the Merseyside Derby.
