Liverpool entered the summer in good spirits—won the Premier League. But they didn’t let it slip. Rather, they went out and had a summer revolution on the orders of new boss Arne Slot. This wasn’t a tidy up—it was a full rebuild for the purposes of holding on to the title, getting the defence sorted, and preparing for life after Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool sent out the message that they’re still going for it.
Wirtz: The Club’s Record Signing
No question about who made the biggest splash: Bayer Leverkusen signing of Florian Wirtz. His transfer was a new British record of £116 million. Wirtz adds flair, creativity, and versatility to Liverpool’s midfield. He didn’t take long to make a difference, as he provided an assist on his debut in the Community Shield. Slot considers his potential as gigantic, provided that he remains fit.
Ekitike Introduces a New Danger
Liverpool did not stop there. They added Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported £79m, a transfer fee made up of a £69m base and add-ons. He is young, hungry, and versatile—he can lead the line or drop deeper to link play. His German goal and assist record was testament enough, and Liverpool moved quickly to sign him when the likes of Newcastle were making inquiries.
New Faces in Defense
Without Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool concentrated on full-back recruits. They signed Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for nearly £30 million and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for around £40 million. They are quick players with youth and new tactical possibilities on both wings.
But Liverpool didn’t settle for just full-backs. They also recruited skilled center-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma for approximately €26 million. He comes in full, no loan, and brings much-needed strength to the back of the accounting bench.
Strengthening Between the Sticks
Goalkeepers were also added. Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman were brought in for depth. One brings experience, and the other brings option with a busy schedule in front of them.
Still Some Spaces to Fill
All this travelling and Liverpool’s rebuilding still isn’t finished. They’re still searching for a center-back to partner Virgil van Dijk, and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is said to be a probable top choice.
Another target for attack is also on the shopping list with Alexander Isak mentioned more than once. He would bring Premier League experience to share with Wirtz and Ekitike.
Early Performances: Bright Attack, Cautious Defense
On the pitch, Liverpool have been a study in contrasts. Their attack has looked sharp and creative, especially in the Community Shield, where Ekitike scored and Wirtz impressed. But the defense is still suspect. In a 2–2 draw at the Community Shield, defense gaps were left gaping in a work-in-progress system.
Legend Didi Hamann issued the warning following the league curtain-raiser, attributing that to uncertainty at the back and full-backs who fail to impose themselves in their areas. He suggested that the lack of Alexander-Arnold’s influence can expose the rest to pressure.
The Road Ahead Under Slot
Liverpool’s summer is promising. They’ve added dynamic frontmen, dynamic defenders, and good depth. But acclimatizing a squad to the big changes and getting settled into Arne Slot’s systems will take time. The rebuild makes for good foundations. But with still more to follow and the squad still coming together into place, confidence needs to be weighed against patience.
Author’s Note
Liverpool’s window has been one of statement and then delivery. They’ve added style, pace, and quality to the team. The real test will be how quickly these new signings get integrated into the team. In time, with the appropriate additions and chemistry, Liverpool would seem to be well placed to be a force in England and in Europe.
