The new system of Liverpool has left the fans with mixed views. one former England striker describing the Reds’ new system as “absolute chaos.” The comment followed another underwhelming performance under Arne Slot.
System of Liverpool Under the Microscope
Since the start of the campaign, Slot has tried to veer away from Jürgen Klopp’s high-pressing standard. Liverpool have instead used a free-flowing, possession-based approach, alternating between a 3-2-4-1 and 4-3-3 in a game. On paper, it seems to be an exhilarating idea, but the truth has been far from consistent.
The former England striker, after Liverpool’s recent match, wasn’t shy to speak up. He referred to the new system as proof of ambition but said it “causes confusion” for players who are yet to find their slot.
The new system has also been justified as going up higher, with midfielders rotating continuously. and full-backs pushing inside the middle half-spaces. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai have been quick at times. But others appear not to be able to handle the quick transitions.
Some of the players, including Ibrahima Konaté and Ryan Gravenberch, have been caught out of position—leading to defensive collapses that have cost Liverpool precious points.
My thoughts
Slot should be given a little patience in my view. It will take time to transition from Klopp’s high-pressing to a tactical formation. But criticism is not unreasonable—Liverpool needs to get their act together at the back and make each player, on an individual basis, understand fully what his role is.
