Due to a domino effect, Liverpool benefitted from their rival Manchester United’s signing of Lisandro Martinez.
Many questioned Liverpool’s decision of putting a £4 million transfer asking fee on Ben Davies early this summer. The club only spent £500,000 when they signed the defender from Preston North End, 18 months ago. But he could not make a single appearance for the senior side during his time at the Anfield outfit. The club loaned him out to Sheffield United where he had a mixed campaign. There he could make only 23 apps for The Blades.
But still, many second-tier clubs want to secure the services of Ben Davies. That includes Burnley, Middlesbrough, Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers as well as Celtic. However, it is the Rangers who agreed to meet the asking price for Ben Davies. Davies also sat out Liverpool’s southeast Asia pre-season tour. Rangers agreed to pay £3 million upfront and £1 million as add-ons.
The domino effect that benefitted Liverpool FC
Manchester United recently completed their signing of Lisandro Martinez from their new manager Erik Ten Hag’s former club Ajax Amsterdam for £57 million. However, their perennial rivals Liverpool also benefitted from this deal.
With the departure of their coveted Argentine, Ajax now will look to replace him. They identified Calvin Bassey of Rangers as a potential replacement pretty quickly and will strike a deal in the coming days. The Scottish club will earn £22.9 million as a result of the departure of their Nigerian international. With that, they offered Liverpool to pay their asking price for Ben Davies. If we overall analyze all the transfers above, we can certainly conclude that the purchase of Lisandro Martinez for Manchester United set off a chain reaction that ultimately benefitted Liverpool to strike a deal that was already deemed surplus for the club.
