Journalist claims Jurgen Klopp can’t rely on the 26-year-old defender

Journalist Toby Cudworth claims Jurgen Klopp can’t rely on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez as the German needs to make an update in January.

Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Cudworth expects Reds to buy a new centre-back and defensive midfielder in the winter transfer window. The journalist also stated that Gomez might be the one to get replaced.

Cudworth discussed the matter and said :-

“I think centre-back is crucial to Liverpool right now. [Virgil] van Dijk is not at the peak of his powers but is still the best option they’ve got.

“[Ibrahima] Konate has struggled with injuries. [Joel] Matip is very up and down in terms of consistency of performance.

“And Joe Gomez is on the periphery, he fills in at right-back every now and again, but I don’t think he has got the trust of Klopp.

“Unfortunately I don’t think he has the ability for what Liverpool needs to continue being in the title mix.

“Liverpool think they can be in the mix for the title.

“So in January I would expect them to try and sign a centre-back and a defensive midfielder and maybe another player on top of that.”

Gomez has already played his best football for Liverpool

Previously, Joe Gomez have been in meticulous form for Mersyside club. He was part of the backline of the Premier League Title Campaign in 2020.

However, the 26-year-old have been a excellent piece of business for Liverpool, as the defender costed only £4 million. He joined from League One side Charlton Athletic back in 2015.

Gomez can still play for other Premier League clubs as West Ham were linked with him in the summer transfer window. His future looks uncertain at the Mersyside.

Hence, Liverpool needs to bring a proper replacement for Gomez as Klopp needs a versatile option at the back. Reds will target a defensive rebuild in the years to come.
