Harry Brook not in the World Cup 2023 squad: Is Ben Stokes the reason

Cricket

It was a shock not to glimpse the name of Harry Brook in the provisional team for England. The 24-year-old star-cricketer made his ODI debut for England in January 2023.

The World Cup 2023 is approaching, and the news feed almost everyday gets flooded with different announcements.

Harry Brook to miss the World Cup

The assumption around Harry Brook not participating in the World Cup 2023 might be because of England’s first class all-rounder Ben Stokes’s surprising return. Ben Stokes announced his retirement from ODI format in July 2022.

However, Harry Brook is an exceptional youngster who has shown his talent in different formats.

In an interview with Sky sports, the ex-skipper of the defending champions team, Eion Morgan stated:

“In really good teams that have a lot of talent, but mainly a lot of success, there are really good players that miss out. When I look at the squad that has been selected, I can’t get Harry Brook into that squad. Simply because the return of Ben Stokes adds another middle-order player. Without him bowling, you do need a top-order player as a genuine replacement if somebody in the top order goes down”

Further, he added that

“You need two seamers and an extra spinner, which they have cover for, but an extra batter in amongst that, I just can’t fit Harry Brook in, which is amazing to say”

England’s team

The world cup 2023 inaugural match is between two finalists of the previous season, England and New Zealand. The two nations will face each other on Oct 5th at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

England’s provisional team:

Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow (wicketkeeper), Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
