According to Fabrizio Romano Chelsea eye Christopher Nkunku as one of their priority signing for the summer. Chelsea had expressed an interest in the Frenchman in the recent transfer window. However, Leipzig refused to sell their star player in the transfer window. Moreover, Nkunku also signed a contract extension with Leipzig which will see him stay at the club till 2026. Josko Gvardiol, the other target for the club was also offered a contract extension by Leipzig. Chelsea came really close to signing Gvardiol in the transfer window but ultimately failed because the interest came very late into the transfer window.
The new owners are not reluctant to splash the cash on Chelsea as was evident in the last transfer window. Chelsea were the biggest spenders in the transfer window. Raheem Sterling and Aubameyang were the reinforcements for the attacking department. They also spent £70 million on Wesley Fofana and £34 million on Kalidou Koulibaly. Currently, another winger is a priority for the Blues and Nkunku is the target. Fabrizio Romano reported it as follows:
“There will be many clubs in the race for Nkunku next summer, including Chelsea as they’ve always been interested and attentive to his growth”
Chelsea target “has no weaknesses”
According to Nkunku’s former manager and current Newcastle United manager Jesse Marsch, Nkunku “has no weaknesses”. He said this after Leipzig’s 6-3 defeat to Manchester City. Nkunku scored all the goals for Leipzig in the match which made him the only player ever to score a hat trick in the Champions League for the club. In the post-match conference, he said:
“Christopher has no weaknesses. He is young and still wants a lot more.“
Chelsea could be a good destination for this given their track record of the development of the youngsters. With a lot of departures imminent in the next transfer window, a move for Nkunku cannot be ruled out. Nkunku will provide the much-needed quality and depth to the Chelsea forward lines.
