Chelsea are reportedly preparing a bid for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong. They are going to rival Manchester United in the race to sign the midfielder.

However, United are leading the race for the Dutch midfielder. Although, Barcelona are open to letting him leave for any club for the right money. They want to improve their financial position.

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE NOT MADE ANY PROGRESS ON PERSONAL TERMS FOR THE MIDFIELDER

Manchester United have already agreed a fee for the Dutch midfielder. However, he is not ready to leave the Catalan giants. Frenkie De Jong considers Barcelona as his dream club. Hence, that is why there has been no progress on personal terms. The other problem is his deferred wages are not paid. He did it to help the club during the pandemic.

The 25-year-old is owed by the club in the region of £14.5m. However, Barcelona are only ready to compensate only £3m of that. Manchester United are happy to pay the difference. However, UEFA and FIFA regulations do not allow another club to compensate for the difference. Furthermore, United are not currently competing in the Champions League in the upcoming season.

According to reports, Barcelona are now expecting a formal proposal from Chelsea in the next few days. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was in Barcelona for meeting Barcelona’s top officials. The meeting was reportedly to discuss the potential sales of Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta to Barcelona. The report states a potential transfer of De Jong to Chelsea was on the agenda.

Chelsea have currently number of midfielders. However, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are on the wrong side of the ’30s. They also have their contracts expiring in 12 months. Some reports state that potential replacements are being identified. However, Chelsea will have to match Manchester United’s bid of £72m. They will also have to solve the problem of deferred wages with the midfielder.

Although, in the end, everything will depend on Frenkie De Jong. His family are well settled in the city. However, we have seen crazier things happen in the transfer window.
