According to the news outlet MARCA, ‘AS Roma will try to sign Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez soon as they look to bolster their midfield ahead of the 2022/23 season.’ The Spanish midfielder spent the last season (2021 – 2022) on loan at the Premier League club Chelsea.

In Atletico Madrid, Saul Niguez initially had a bright start. But afterwards, he fell down the ranks with the emergence of Koke and Rodrigo de Paul. The Spain international decided to leave the club temporarily on loan for last season for more game time. Other than that, the player was also unhappy with the role Diego Simeone offered him. On his leaving, last month, Saul left a thank you note for Chelsea fans via social media:

“Hello, Blues. I’m writing to take my leave of you. I would like to tell you how I felt during this adventure. Things didn’t start well at all. After a long time at home, changing everything wasn’t easy.”

“Little by little things got better. Everything in life serves to improve and learn, and that’s what I take from this adventure. I’d like to thank the club for trying to take care of every detail to make me feel at home. I’d also like to give recognition to each worker, thank you.”

“Thank you for making this club much bigger. Thanks to all the fans for supporting me through thick and thin. I will be forever grateful. Thanks to all the staff for making it possible for me to win titles with the blue shirt. @ChelseaFC”

“But above all, I wanted to thank my teammates. They have been fundamental so that I wouldn’t fall apart. They helped me to continue supporting the team and live a calm and positive day to day. Thank you! @ChelseaFC”

However, his stint for the west London club was average at best. Now back in the Spanish capital, he again wants to move for game time. As per reports from Il Messaggero, ‘the Giallorossi are still very much interested in the Atleti midfielder at the exclusive request of Jose Mourinho.’ The report also mentioned that Atleti will let him go to pursue Valencia captain Carlos Soler.
