Details about a faulty VAR emerge in the aftermath of the Liverpool vs Arsenal game

Arsenal put forth a statement of intent in their match against Liverpool. The Gunners defeated Liverpool 3-2 at the Emirates amidst a cloud of controversy surrounding the game. First was the penalty decision given in the favour of the Gunners in the 75th minute. Gabriel Jesus went down very easily in the Liverpool box which prompted the referee to award a penalty to Arsenal. Moreover, most of the pundits think that it was a ‘soft’ decision and this allowed Arsenal to ease some pressure in the game. Eventually, this penalty was the reason why the Gunners won the match.

Another controversy that has emerged in the aftermath is the scrutiny regarding the VAR system. Arsenal striker Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners the lead with a beautiful strike. Bukayako Saka, who was the carrier of the ball into the final third, was in a possible offside position. However, the flag stayed down, and the Gunners were able to score the goal to the dismay of Liverpool players and the jubilation of the Arsenal fans. Moreover, According to LiverpoolEcho, when the decision was taken up to VAR, the video assistant referees couldn’t draw the virtual lines necessary to reach a decision. Consequently, the goal stayed and this gave Arsenal a 1-0 lead.

Former Arsenal player Kevin Campbell labeled this incident as ‘crazy’. Speaking to football insider, he said:

“Look, I do not know what is going on or how that has happened. It is crazy. The thing is, even when VAR does work it gets the decisions wrong. We pay all of this money for the technology and it does not work or it is used incorrectly by the officials”
