Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has reportedly rejected a new contract at Stamford Bridge, as he approaches the end of his deal with the Blues.

The German is into the final year of his contract in London. This allows him to discuss pre-contract agreements with other clubs from the beginning of January.

According to Marca, Rudiger’s representatives have already held talks with European giants Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Both clubs are set to offer contract proposals to the centre-back in January.

Why does Antonio Rudiger want to leave the current European Champions?

Since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, Rudiger has been one of the first names on the team sheet. He took his opportunities and affirmed himself as one of the best defenders in world football right now.

On the face of it, Rudiger has no reason to leave the club. But, with his contract due to expire next year, the 28-year-old is well within his rights to consider his options.

Additionally, sources claim that Rudiger wants to double his £100,000-a-week wage to sign what would likely be the last big deal of his career. Chelsea have so far only indicated they are willing to offer around £150,000-a-week.

Chelsea are risking losing Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer next summer as they refuse to meet his demands over a new contract. The prospect of a Champions League winning centre-back in the peak years of his career being available for nothing is bound to attract interest from top clubs all over Europe. Apart from  Bayern and Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have also previously expressed an interest in Rudiger.

Rudiger has featured in every minute of competitive action for Chelsea so far this season. He also played in every knockout game of their Champions League winning campaign last term.
