Manchester City, also called Manchester City Football Club is an English football club based in Manchester, England. They compete in the Premier League, which is the top division of English football.
The club was founded in 1880 as St. Mark’s (West Gorton). It became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and was later named Manchester City in 1894. The club’s home ground was Maine Road till 2003. However, City later moved to the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester. The club adopted their sky blue home shirts in 1894. They are currently ranked 6th in the all-time English top-flight table since its creation in 1888. As a result, this makes them one of the country’s most successful football clubs.
The club received considerable financial investment in both playing staff and club facilities. This financial boost took place following the club’s takeover by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan through the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008. Meanwhile, this started a new era of achievement. The club won the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League in 2012. Both of these came for the first time since the 1960s. This was followed by another League in 2014.
Under the management of Pep Guardiola City won the Premier League in 2018. They became the only Premier League team to attain 100 points in a single season. In 2019, they won four trophies to win the domestic treble. In addition to winning the third Premier League title in the Guardiola era, City reached their first European Cup final in 2021. However, they lost to Chelsea in the final.
Manchester City entered the Football League in 1892 and won their first major honor with the FA Cup in 1904. The club had its first major success in the late 1960-the 70s. They won the League, European Cup Winners Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup under the management of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison during that period. After losing the 1981 FA Cup Final, the club went through a period of decline. City eventually faced relegation to the third tier of English football for the only time in its history in 1998. They since regained promotion to the top tier in 2001–02. Since then they have remained in the Premier League from 2002–03.
Manchester City’s biggest rivalry is with neighbors Manchester United. The face-off between the two teams is called the Manchester derby.
Over the last few years, Man City has also developed a notable rivalry with Liverpool FC. It is now often considered to be one of the biggest rivalries in association football. Under managers Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, the rivalry obtained its current significance in the 2018-19 season. In that season Man City beat Liverpool to the Premier League title by a single point.
Manchester City’s revenue was the fifth highest of a football club in the world in the 2018–19 season at €568.4 million. In 2019, Forbes estimated the club was the fifth most valuable in the world at $2.69 billion. The club is owned by the City Football Group. The Abu Dhabi United Group holds the primary interest in the holding company.
