Nico Hulkenberg is all set to replace Mick Schumacher in Haas from 2023 onwards.
Nico Hulkenberg will be making a return as a full-time driver for the first time since 2019 in Formula 1. The German will be replacing Mick Schumacher marking the end of the 2 years long run with the team.
The rumors and reports of Hulkenberg making a return were circulating for quite a while in the paddock now.
Schumacher joined the US-based squad back in 2021 alongside Nikita Mazepin. Schumacher and Haas had a terrible season in 2021 failing to score even a single point. This year, however, the German managed to secure his first-ever points now having 12 points this season.
The team, however, decided to drop Schumacher for Hulkenberg. Many believe the crashes and inconsistent performances to be the main reason behind this step.
Guenther Steiner thanks Schumacher for his contributions
“I would like to thank Mick Schumacher for his contribution to the team over the past couple of years,”
said Haas team boss Guenther Steiner.
“Mick’s pedigree in the junior categories was well known and he has continued to grow and develop as a driver in his time with Haas F1 Team – culminating in his first Formula 1 points-scoring successes earlier this season.“
“While choosing to go in separate directions for the future the entire team wishes Mick well for the next steps in his career path and beyond.”
‘I feel like I never left’ – Hulkenberg
Nico Hulkenberg makes the return to Formula 1 for the first time after leaving the Renault team in 2019. He got his nickname of “super-sub” afterward coming in to replace drivers for a few races in the following years.
The German finally again gets a permanent full-time seat in F1:
“I’m very happy to move into a full-time race seat with Haas in 2023. I feel like I never really left Formula 1,”
said Hülkenberg.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to do what I love the most again and want to thank Gene Haas and Günther Steiner for their trust. We have work ahead of us to be able to compete with all the other teams in the midfield, and I cannot wait to join that battle again.”
Steiner also welcomed Hulkenberg to the team.
Steiner stated:
“The experience and knowledge base Nico brings to the team is clear to see – with nearly 200 career starts in Formula 1 – and a reputation as being a great qualifier and a solid, reliable racer.”
