Leeds United have lowered their asking price for Raphinia. Spanish outlet Sport claim that the Premier League outfit has taken this measure to ensure the sale can go through smoothly.
Raphinia has been linked to a move away from Elland Road for quite some time now. After Leeds escaped relegation on the final day of the 2021/22 season, they got more leverage in any negotiations for selling their players. Hence, they initially asked for a big sum of money to let go of their star player.
But now they are willing to lower it to facilitate a smoother sale. The new reported price is around €50 million (£42.7m). Barcelona remains the most interested in the winger.
The feeling is mutual. Raphinia is a top player, who has attracted interest from several clubs. The Spanish giants remain his priority, though.
Why Have Leeds Taken Such A Step?
Barcelona are currently struggling financially. Big purchases made by the previous president Josep Maria Bartomeu, have crippled their finances. These failed transfers, along with a lack of success on the pitch led to a shortage of money at the club, which is now in over 1 billion Euros of debt. The situation got so bad that they had to let go of their club icon Lionel Messi on a free transfer.
Even now, although they have signed a few players, they are unable to register them. Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen already have an agreement to join the club for months. However, due to La Liga wage regulations, they are unable to register them.
Now, due to their precarious situation, Leeds have helped the Catalan club by lowering their asking price. Perhaps they hope that the long-drawn-out saga can conclude, and they can reinvest the money into their squad.
Other than Barcelona, it has emerged that Tottenham and Arsenal have entered the race too for the Brazilian’s signature.
