Harry Maguire retains captaincy of United under Ten Hag

Manchester United

Despite the criticism faced by the English international, Ten Hag has named him as the captain of the squad

New Manchester United manager, Erik Ten Hag has named Harry Maguire as the captain of the Manchester United squad. Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender in the world following his move to Old Trafford from Leicester City. His transfer cost United a whopping £80million and he has struggled to live up to this price tag.

Harry Maguire has had a dismal season in the United jersey. He has faced criticism by pundits and fans alike for his poor showing. Now, his poor run of form might end up costing him his place in the starting eleven of the United squad. Moreover, Ten Hag is already on the lookout for a new center-back and Lisandro Martinez of Ajax is heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford

Ole Soljasker handed him the captain’s armband in 2019 following the exit of Ashley Young to Inter Milan. Owning to his bad performances and poor run of form, the armband was taken from him by interim manager Ralf Ragnick. Maguire has faced intense criticism from the media and the fans. However, not everybody is critical of the player. Gary Neville has spoken out in favor of Harry Maguire being appointed as the captain of the squad by Ten Hag. Gary Neville has backed ten Hag’s decision and has said the following:

“Good. So the same United fans fuming with me for applauding the decision to keep Maguire as captain seem to be without knowing criticising the new manager for his decision. Maybe support Maguire and stop bullying him on here. The new manager obviously likes him.”

Maguire missed the first pre-season match against Liverpool

Harry Maguire has missed the first match of the pre-season owning to an injury complaint. He has suffered from a ‘slight knock’ which has led to his exclusion from the squad. Ten Hag named a strong side for his first unofficial game managing United. United defeated long-time rivals Liverpool 4-0 in the pre-season game. Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial, and Facundo Pellistri contributed to United’s victory.
