Greenwood not in Manchester United’s Champions League squad list

Manchester United

Mason Greenwood is not included in  Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League squad list.

United have submitted their 25-man squad list, but without star striker Mason Greenwood. The young forward’s absence from the list left many fans intrigued.

There was concern that Greenwood suffered an unknown injury that would rule him out long-term. Some even suspected that he might’ve been the victim of an administration error.

The 19-year-old did not take part in England’s Euro 2020 campaign after suffering from burnout. He was not included in their most recent squad either. However, his lack of inclusion in United’s squad list is quite simple – the club don’t need to register him.

Greenwood will still be eligible to play for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League this season despite being left out of the squad list for the group stages of the tournament.

How will Manchester United register Greenwood for Champions League?

UEFA rules state that any player under the age of 21 that qualifies as “homegrown” doesn’t need to be registered as part of the maximum 25-man squad for the tournament. Instead, these players are added to the “B” list and are not named as part of the 25-man squad. This means that even though they aren’t listed on the official UEFA website, they will still be able to play in the tournament as long as they are added to the B list which can be amended by the club at any time.

It is a rule that English clubs often take advantage of.  United are merely repeating what they did last season. Academy graduates Shola Shoretire, Hannibal Mejbri and Anthony Elanga were included on the B list in the Europa League during the knockout rounds. They are likely to feature this time round as well in the Champions League.

Man United begin their Champions League campaign this season on Tuesday, September 14. They take on Swiss champions BSC Young Boys in their first match, before games against Villarreal and Atalanta who make up the rest of the group.
