Barcelona Faces Obstacles in Pursuit of Joao Cancelo as Manchester City Resists Loan Deal

Manchester City

FC Barcelona in a quest to strengthen their right-back position has brought Manchester City’s João Cancelo back into the picture. The Catalan club, under manager Xavi Hernández, is evaluating options to bolster their squad, and Cancelo is seen as an experienced player who fits the profile. However, securing a loan deal for the Portuguese defender has proven challenging, with Manchester City reluctant to let him go on a temporary basis.

Barcelona Interest in Cancelo

Xavi Hernández, has expressed the need to strengthen the right-back position. Barcelona included Joao Cancelo, along with Real Valladolid’s Iván Fresneda, in their target list. Furthermore, Barcelona’s initial idea was to bring in an experienced player, and Cancelo’s previous loan spell at Bayern Munich caught their attention. Xavi has always admired Cancelo, and the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, supports the potential move. However, Manchester City has shown resistance.

Reports suggest tension between Xavi and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, which complicates Cancelo’s potential move to Barcelona. Despite this, Barcelona president Joan Laporta maintains good relationships with both Guardiola and Manchester City director Txiki Begiristain. Laporta’s involvement could play a crucial role in facilitating the transfer.

Barca’s Transfer Plans: Exploring Alternatives

Barcelona’s financial constraints have hindered their ability to sign Cancelo, even on loan. The club’s economic condition has limited their options in the transfer market. Additionally, Cancelo’s market value is estimated at €50 million, making a permanent deal unfeasible for Barcelona. Their focus has shifted to considering alternative options for strengthening the right-back position.

Joan Laporta, has outlined the club’s intention to strengthen the squad with two midfielders and two fullbacks this summer. They have already secured the signing of Ilkay Gundogan as a free agent from Manchester City. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have departed the club, leaving further space to reinforce the squad.

Nevertheless, Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, favors the idea of signing a young fullback. The club is considering a range of alternatives and expects to make a final decision in the coming week. While Cancelo could potentially force the move, Manchester City remains calm and is not willing to part ways with the fullback easily.
