Real Madrid defeated Celtic in the opening game of the Champions League. Goals by Vinicius, Modric, and Hazard saw the reigning European Champions win their first match in a comfortable 3-0 margin. However, the game was far from being a comfortable one for Madrid. Celtic went toe-to-toe with the Champions in the first half. But, ultimately, they were outclassed by Real Madrid.

It was a frantic first half from Celtic as they created a series of chances in the game. Celtic lost their chance to get the lead after a shot from Callum McGregor went off the post. But, Madrid found their groove in the second half of the game at Celtic park. The major reason was the fatigue and lack of concentration exhibited by the players in the second half. Consequently, Madrid scored twice in four minutes. Carlo Ancelotti, speaking in the post-match press conference said:

“We were not surprised (with the start by Celtic). We knew they could start really fast, we were lucky because they hit the post. Second half, was much better. When we opened to scoring it was easier for us to control the ball.”

Celtic manager thinks this is a learning experience

Celtic manager Angie Postecoglou believes that his side will learn a lot from this loss. He said:

“I think every game is going to be tough and every game we’ve (Celtic) got to understand that it’s a fine margin between success and failure, and we’ve just to make sure we’re more clinical at both ends of the field. The first goal was always going to be pretty important on the night, and up until that point I thought we were well in the game. Once they scored, they took control of the game a little bit, we lost our composure and they have the quality to punish you in those moments.”
