Ferrari to bring a new upgraded engine in Belgium

Franz Tost Germany

Ferrari will be bringing a new engine hybrid system at the Belgian Grand Prix.

New engine rules of 2022 sees certain parts of the power unit be frozen since March 1. This includes Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), a Turbocharger, and MGU-H. Performance-related upgrades are banned but reliability upgrades can be introduced.

But certain parts like MGU-K, Energy Store, and Control Electronics could be upgraded by the teams up to 1 September, provided they had not done it earlier in the season.

The race in Belgium is the last before that September 1 deadline. Hence all the engine manufacturers will be looking to bring upgrades for the final time before the engines are frozen.

Ferrari looking for reliability

Ferrari especially will be looking to improve their reliability as there have been multiple engine issues for the Ferrari-powered teams.

The Ferrari-powered teams, Haas and Alfa Romeo have suffered a lot of mechanical failures throughout the 2022 season.

Leclerc suffered reliability woes while leading in Spain and Azerbaijan. Sainz had an engine failure in Azerbaijan and his engine went up in flames in Austria.

Ferrari team boss, Mattia Binotto however, denied the possibility of stockpiling engines.

“Yes, we expect improvements to the hybrid system that can help us during the entire period of the engine freeze; we are working hard, but it won’t be a turning point,”

“I don’t think that’s a strategy, but rather the consequence.

“It was the case for [Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes in 2021], because I don’t think that was predetermined. It’s always better to have the strongest, but most reliable engine.”

Other engine suppliers – Mercedes, Renault, and Red Bull Powertrains – have not given any news regarding when they will bring the updates.

Post the September 1 deadline, these engines will remain frozen until the end of 2025 before the new engine regulations come into force in 2026.
