The potential transfer of Raheem Sterling to Real Madrid has reportedly received Carlo Ancelotti’s approval. They failed in their attempt to get Kylian Mbappe earlier in the window. Now they are looking at alternatives, with Sterling at the top of their list.
During Manchester City’s 2021–22 Premier League winning season, the 27-year-old was once again a key contributor. In 47 games across all competitions, he scored 17 goals and 9 assists.
Since his contract is in its final years, Sterling’s future has been under speculation. He has found himself behind the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden in the lineup. Erling Haaland’s addition to Man City’s frontline has further bolstered it. Sterling’s playing time at the club may be further restricted by Jack Grealish’s desire to improve after a disappointing debut season after a record signing with the Citizens.
Chelsea’s offer of £21.4 million-plus add-ons for Sterling is said to have fallen through. Man City demand more than £55 million for the striker this summer. Sterling has expressed a desire to play in his native London again, which may give Chelsea some leverage in the negotiations.
Do Madrid Need Sterling?
In addition to Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan have reportedly expressed interest in the former England international.
Since Gareth Bale, Isco, and Marcelo have already left Los Blancos this summer on free transfers, the club will save money on salaries. The potential departures of Luka Jovic, Mariano Diaz and Marco Asensio can leave a gaping hole in Madrid’s attack. Add this to Eden Hazard’s unreliable fitness, and a new attacker becomes a priority.
Fede Valverde has often chipped in at right-wing, while Rodrygo has performed well there too. But Raheem Sterling can be a cut apart from the two. An addition like him can further solidify the La Liga and UCL winners.
