Liverpool wants to land ‘long-term target’ 24-year old Argentine star Lautaro Martinez

Liverpool FC

Liverpool have been tracking the Argentine international Lautaro Martinez for over 18 months. They will be excited by the prospect of signing a permanent deal that will bring the Serie A star over to the red camp of Merseyside. Lautaro Martinez is also keen on joining the Reds and is willing to make his switch over to Premier League.

Lautaro scored his 4th goal in 3 games that aided his side to a 3-1 triumph over AS Roma. Inter Milan are currently 2nd in Serie A table with 72 points with a game in hand. Their arch-rival AC Milan are at the top with 74 points. But with a full 90 minutes played more than the Nerazzurri.

Inter and Liverpool came face to face in this season’s UCL campaign in the Round of 16. From there Liverpool advanced through the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 2-1 in their favor. The only Inter player on the scoresheet over both legs was none other than Lautaro himself.. He unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the Liverpool goal. His strike handed Liverpool a rare defeat at their fortress Anfield.

Will Lautaro Martinez be able to cope with Klopp’s expectations?

In all competitions, the Argentine forward scored a total of 20 goals this season. 16 in Serie A, 2 in Coppa Italia, and 1 each in Supercoppa Italiana and Champions League. This is quite a laudable output.

With Roberto Firmino‘s contract set to expire in 2023, it is quite unsure if the Brazilian would like to sign a new one after he fell down the pecking order since Diogo Jota‘s arrival. If Firmino opts for a offer away from the Anfield, Liverpool need to replace him so that they can keep hold of their phenomenal depth and quality in the forward positions.

Currently, Inter Milan valued Lautaro at a far-fetched price of €90m (£75m) but it is highly unlikely that they will sell him and will try to fend off interests from European giants.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool wanted to sign Martinez “a year and a half ago before taking Diogo Jota” from Wolves for £45million.
