West Ham are closing in on the appointment of Julen Lopetegui after confirming that David Moyes will leave his post as manager. As his contract expires at the end of the season. Moyes’s future has been uncertain for much of the campaign. His chances of staying were diminished by West Ham’s poor form during the second half of the campaign. West Ham have won four matches in all competitions in 2024. Their hopes of qualifying for Europe for the fourth consecutive season were ended by their 5-0 defeat by Chelsea on Sunday. David Moyes can very well be in line for next Premier League manager to get sacked.

Overall, Moyes has done an outstanding job since returning to the London Stadium. In his second spell in he led the team away from relegation trouble after replacing Manuel Pellegrini. He went on to establish them in the top half of the Premier League. They won the Europa Conference League in 2023, West Ham’s first major piece of silverware in 43 years.

Is Lopetegui right fit for Premier League manager?

Lopetegui is yet to gain approval within West Ham. Some at the club of the view that the former Real Madrid, Sevilla and Spain manager is not the right fit. A younger manager is needed according to them. However there are doubts over whether West Ham are prepared to pay Amorim’s buyout clause of €15m (£13m).

Moreover Lopetegui has attended at least one game at the London Stadium this season and has experience of managing in the Premier League. He joined Wolves midway through last season and led them away from a relegation battle. However he could not find his footing there.

West Ham’s shortlist includes Hansi Flick, the former Germany manager, while Graham Potter and Steve Cooper are available. Fulham’s Marco Silva is another option.
