Manchester United lose to Arsenal revealing a chink in their defence

Arsenal FC

Arsenal recently bested Manchester United 3-1, revealing the fragility of the Red Devils‘ current defence, which will be problematic later.

The recent Premier League match was a high point in the career of multiple players, namely Man United’s Rasmus Hojlund. The player left a great first impression for his club, after coming into play as a replacement for Anthony Martial. While 20 minutes of play is not much to base a concrete opinion, the future does seem somewhat promising.

That sadly does not apply to the club’s backline, which crumbled once both Victor Lindelöf and Lisandro Martinez became injured. The replacements Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire were great and reliable in the past, but did not deliver during this match.

Despite the team’s loss, the match ended positively overall considering the severity of the issue and the worst possible outcomes.

The defence of Manchester United against Arsenal is a nightmare

There are many distinct variables that lead to this moment, some recent, while others were far more accumulative in nature.

The two replacements for example were a golden duo back in the 2018 Premier League, but have deteriorated since then. In fact, after the Northern Ireland match against Slovenia, Jonny Evans criticised his performance which was not up to standards.

“I didn’t think I played great myself. I know I got a goal, but my own personal performance probably wasn’t up to scratch. I’m experienced enough and wise enough to admit that. We can’t be giving away cheap goals at the start of the game like we did.” Stated Evans.

Another reason is a lack of foresight, as the club did not acquire any center-backs during the last transfer window.

Luckily, the injured players will be making a swift recovery, but should they be injured again, the cycle will repeat.
